Les gagnants des 64e Grammy Awards annuels ont été annoncés au MGM Grand Garden Arena de Las Vegas ce week-end, la Béninoise Angélique Kidjo remportant le prix du meilleur album musical mondial.
Kidjo a remporté le prix pour son album Mother Nature, portant son total de Grammy à cinq. Elle a battu les soumissions de ses collègues artistes africains Rocky Dawuni (Ghabna), Wizkid (Nigéria), Femi et Made Kuti (Nigéria) et Daniel Ho & Friends (États-Unis). Kidjo a également été nominée deux fois dans la catégorie Meilleure performance musicale mondiale, mais a perdu face à Arooj Aftab (Pakistan) pour son travail « Mohabbat ». Les autres nominés africains dans cette catégorie étaient Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, Wizkid et Tems.
Dans son discours d’acceptation, Kidjo a célébré les différents collaborateurs du LP, en particulier les jeunes voix africaines comme Mr Eazi, Sampa le Grand et Yemi Alade.
Black Coffee d’Afrique du Sud a remporté le prix du meilleur album de danse / électronique pour Inconsciemment, tandis que Pangea de Wouter Kellerman a perdu face à Stewart Copeland et Divine Tides de Ricky Kej dans la catégorie Meilleur album New Age.
Black Coffee a félicité les différents collaborateurs du projet, qui « croyaient en travaillant avec un artiste plus petit comme moi et en me faisant confiance et en faisant confiance à mon oreille ».
L’Afrique est entrée dans les Grammys de cette année avec neuf nominations directes historiques, son plus grand contingent de nominés à ce jour.
Pendant ce temps, le duo R&B Silk Sonic, composé de Bruno Mars et Anderson .Paak, a remporté le très convoité Record of the Year Award pour «Leave the Door Open», tandis que l’Album de l’année est allé à Jon Baptiste pour We Are.
